Travel tips
- Cash
- Credit card via AliPay
- WiFi
- Mobile network
- Language
- Air
- Tourism in Nanjing
- Toilet
Small restaurants do not have toilets. There are many public toilets on the street, though possibly without toilet papers. Buy and bring your own.
Credit cards are rarely accepted, except for Starbucks. It is important to get cash at the airport either by withdrawal or by an exchange. Check your condition for overseas withdrawal in advance.
There seems to be a workaround for using credit card in China. First you download and install the international version of AliPay app on your smart phone. Then you register your passport and a foreign credit card. Finally you top up by using Tour pass.
(Warning: I have never tried this method).
To use the free WiFi at the Nanjing (and Shanghai) airport, you need to find a ticket machine for registration (or go to Starbucks). Public WiFi is not ubiquitous in the city.
The SIM card for travelers is not sold in Nanjing. If you want to use your mobile, purchase a SIM card for travelers before coming to China. Such cards can cross the Great Firewall, but will become invalid after several days.
Not many people in Nanjing speak English. However, they carry mobile phones, and may have installed translation apps. Note that Google Translate works in China.
Beware the yellow dust from Central Asia in winter. Wear a mask if you are allergic.
